One to Watch – Mornington

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday August 27
The most expensive Fastnet Rock filly sold in 2018 cast off maiden status at Mornington on Tuesday.

Southbank as a yearlingThe Pinecliff Racing colours have had plenty of success aboard Fastnet Rock filly Shoals and while Southbank has a way to go to emulate her success, she is now a winner and a filly going places.

Trained by Anthony Freedman, who also put the polish on Shoals, Southbank was resuming from a spell following an unplaced debut back in April.

She enjoyed a good run in transit for Mark Zahra just behind the leaders and accelerated when clear to score a length win in the 1200 metre maiden as favourite.

"She’s always been a nice filly and it’s good that she had that good experience today,” said Zahra.

"I think she’ll get over further as well.”

Entered for the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas, Southbank was a $1,250,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft for Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock. She is the first foal from Group III wining Zabeel mare Rezoned, a full sister to four time Group I winner and $3.4 million earner Preferment.

Rezoned was bought by Tom Magnier at the 2015 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $825,000 and has been to champion sire Fastnet Rock in every year since then and was covered by him again last spring.
