Top Class Snitzel Son for Victoria

Tara Madgwick - Thursday July 12

Until now, Victorian breeders looking to utilize the blood of reigning champion sire Snitzel had to look outside their home state to find a quality option, but that has all changed with the arrival of top class sprinter Thronum to Sun Stud.

Thronum in full flightA $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Sun Stud, Thronum was a late November foal, but quickly justified his pricetag winning two of his first three starts at two before claiming a stakes win in the Listed ATC Rosebud Stakes at his first outing at three.

An interrupted three year-old season and stable change from Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott to Lindsay Park Racing saw Thronum hit top form for the Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig combination.

He scored a dazzling all the way win in the Group II MVRC Australia Stakes over 1200 metres beating a quality field including Group I winner Brave Smash to clock the fastest time by an entire since the race became the Australia Stakes.

Thronum then went painfully close to nailing a Group I win when leading everywhere but on the post, when narrowly beaten by Hellbent in the Group I MVRC William Reid Stakes (1200m). He was pressured in front and ran 3 sub 11 second sectionals before being pipped on the line by a swooper.

Timeform ratings demonstrate the genuine class and speed of Thronum 119 (Service Fee: $17,600), who compares favourably with Russian Revolution 120 (Service fee: $55,000) and reveals exceptional value.

Snitzel - sire of 26 stakes winners & over $28m in progeny earnings in 2017/18 - an Australian record"Thronum was a high class performer, had brilliant speed and was tough. What's more, he had the ability to lead quality fields and carve out exceptional sectional times," said David Hayes.

Thronum has performance and type well covered, but also pedigree being by the exceptionally dominant sire Snitzel from a female family that includes world renowned sires Street Cry (116 stakes winners) and Shamardal (116 stakes winners). Both have been extremely successful in Australia, the former achieving lasting fame and glory for giving us two time Australian Horse of the Year, Winx.

Sun Stud will ensure Thronum has every opportunity to succeed and will be supporting him with some lovely mares including the following:

Yosei, Multiple Group I winner
Miss Mossman, Group I winner
Berengaria, dam of Group I winner Politeness
Always Discreet, Group II placed half to Group I winner Maybe Discreet
Dower, stakes placed and dam of stakes winner and Group I placed Dowager Queen
Slapstick Group III winner from the family of Virage de Fortune

THRONUM will stand for an advertised service fee of $17,600 including GST .
