Two Highest Priced Yearlings in World This Year Highlight Tattersalls October Day 1

Media Release - Wednesday October 8

The opening day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale saw two colts realise 3,700,000 guineas and 3,600,000 guineas, both exceeding the highest price for a yearling sold anywhere in the world in 2025, and five seven-figure lots.

The stars very much aligned for the Longview Stud consigned colt who topped the opening day of Book 1 at 3,700,000 guineas. The March foaled colt is by SEA THE STARS, for whom DARYZ became a 24th Group 1 winner when winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, and boasted a physical to match an outstanding pedigree. Amo Racing’s Kia Joorabchian made a determined effort to secure the colt from his customary spot in the second row of the bidders, but Godolphin would not be denied.

“He is from a very good stud farm,” commented Anthony Stroud. “He is by Sea The Stars and from a great Rothschild family that goes well with the sire. This colt is majestic, the way he moves and walks, he is a lovely horse. He stood out for us and is the one we really wanted.” He added: “You have to pay for the ones you really want, and he was that horse. You always have to pay more than you want!”

The SEA THE STARS colt is a half-brother to the black type filly CRYSTAL CAPRICE out of the Listed winning DUBAWI mare CRYSTAL ZVEZDA, a half-sister to SEA THE STARS’ Champion European Older Horse CRYSTAL OCEAN. CRYSTAL ZVEZDA was bought for 775,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2022 when sold as part of the late Sir Evelyn de Rothschild’s Southcourt Stud dispersal.

Déjà Vu as Amo Strike for Newsells Park Stud’s Frankel

There was a sense of déjà vu on the opening day of Book 1 as the session’s second highest priced lot was bought by Amo Racing, consigned by Newsells Park Stud, and was by FRANKEL out of the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes winner ALJAZZI. This year’s renewal featured a colt rather than a filly but he followed his own-sister into the sales ring stratosphere when realising 3,600,000 guineas.

“The boys loved him, we could not let him go. We want to keep the family tight and see how the family works out – obviously if he becomes a good horse, he is going to be a stallion. He probably goes to Freemason,” revealed Kia Joorabchian.

He added: “Obviously we like the filly, though she hasn’t run yet. This is a different project – if she doesn’t run she still has a huge residual value as a broodmare, and we have five stallions. If he doesn’t then it is a different kettle of fish! We paid more than we were expecting, but then we are up against Coolmore and it is five against one. It is an early strike!”

Newsells Park Stud’s General Manager Julian Dollar said: “Honestly when I did the budget in December, I put a measly half a million to him – he was a big raw Frankel, but he has really come together through the year, especially in his prep.

“Coming in here, I thought there was a chance he might make seven figures, it was a bit like the filly last year. But when two big hitters lock horns there is always a chance they can make unbelievable amounts, which that was.”

When asked if the colt’s sale took the pressure off early this week for Newsells Park, Dollar laughed: “Yes – a lot! This really helps. These horses are expensive to produce, the nominations are expensive and we are very fortunate to sometimes get rewarded. Sometimes the harvest does not always go as well as expected, but that was a nice result.”

ALJAZZI was bought by Newsells Park Stud at the 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 1,000,000 guineas. Her two-year-old filly, now named PARTYING, realised 4,400,000 guineas in 2024, the second highest price for a yearling in European auction history, and is in training with Kevin Philippart De Foy.

Blue Point & Too Darn Hot Colts to Godolphin for 1,000,000 Guineas

Godolphin secured a further 9 lots on the opening day of the sale including a pair of colts for 1,000,000 guineas apiece by Godolphin’s promising young sires BLUE POINT and TOO DARN HOT. The first through the ring was the Ballyhimikin Stud consigned son of Champion Sprinter BLUE POINT, and Godolphin again had to see off the attentions of a persistent Kia Joorabchian to purchase the popular colt.

“He is a super horse, he never turned a hair all week,” said Ballyhimikin’s James Hanly. “He travelled very well, he settled in well here, he showed so many times. A week ago he was out in a field, without a rug, rolling in mud and covered in mud! We like to keep them out as much as possible.”

The April-foaled colt is the second highest priced yearling by BLUE POINT sold to date and is his promising young sire’s second millionaire yearling. His dam BOSTON ROCKER was herself Group placed and he is a half-brother to the Group 2 winner and French 2000 Guineas third SAN DONATO and to high class two-year-old ROCK ON THUNDER, second in this year’s Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes.

Godolphin’s second million guineas colt was bred and consigned by Airlie Stud and is a half-brother to their Champion Two-Year-Old Filly SKITTER SCATTER out of the STREET CRY mare DANE STREET, a half-sister to Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes winner INTENSE FOCUS.

Airlie Stud’s Anthony Rogers said: “It is a great price, he is a lovely horse. You can never believe that you are going to get a million for a horse. Dane Street has been an amazing mare for us, and we failed to sell her here about 15 years ago! She is still breeding, but she has had a rest this year.”

The colt is also a half-brother to Listed winners SKELLET and VICTORY DANCE and to the Graded Stakes placed DATA DEPENDENT, the dam of Grade 1 Belmont Oaks winner ASPEN GROVE.

Juddmonte Secure Lodge Park Stud’s Night of Thunder Colt

The fifth seven-figure lot of the session was the NIGHT OF THUNDER colt consigned by Lodge Park Stud who realised 1,000,000 guineas to Juddmonte. The colt is the latest million guineas representative of a family that Lodge Park Stud has curated with outstanding success out of their blue hen PARK EXPRESS.

The February-foaled colt is the first foal out of EXPRESS WAY, a half-sister to the Epsom Oaks winner WAS and three further Group/Listed winners out of ALLURING PARK, a Listed placed half-sister to dual Champion and Derby winner NEW APPROACH.

The family’s victories on the racecourse have been matched by success in the sales ring, ALLURING PARK is the dam of the record-priced GALILEO filly sold for 5,000,000 guineas in 2013 and PARK BLOOM, another daughter of ALLURING PARK, is the dam of last year’s record-priced 4,300,000 guineas yearling colt.

Lodge Park Stud’s Jamie Burns commented: “That has exceeded expectations greatly. He is a lovely moving horse, and he is going to a great home, he will get every opportunity there. We went to Night of Thunder as we were trying to get Galileo back into the pedigree. We are trying to keep the generations going – it is up to us to keep it going.”

Juddmonte’s Simon Mockridge said: “He is just a super horse, a lovely horse and that is what you have to pay, it is very expensive in there. He is a very good mover, easy going, and showed well all week. It is an amazing family, it is a wonderful page, and the stallion has been fantastic this year. We are delighted to buy him, he looks a fast horse.”

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues at 11am on Wednesday, 8th October.
