Stakes Potential for Sebring Winners

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 3
A big team of Blueblood Thoroughbreds celebrated a smart Rosehill win on Saturday with progressive Sebring mare Sedanzer, a $125,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Three Bridges Thoroughbreds draft.

SedanzerTrained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Sedanzer (image Steve Hart) was thought good enough to contest some of the better staying races for three year-olds in Adelaide last season finishing fourth in the Group III SAJC Auraria Stakes and fifth in the Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks.

She resumed from a spell to win at Rosehill last month and repeated the performance to win even more impressively at the same venue on Saturday.

Sedanzer surged clear to win over 1500 metres by a length and a half as favourite, taking her overall record to five wins from just 11 starts with prizemoney a topping $146,000.

Sedanzer looms as nice horse to follow over the summer as she steps up in distance with the Group III Belle of the Turf Stakes (1600m) a likely target.

Bred by Three Bridges in partnership with Richard Pegum, Sedanzer is a half-sister to stakes-placed So Detached and is one of three winners from Voltdanze, a three-quarter sister to Group I winner Dealer Principal.

Voltdanze has foaled this spring producing a colt by Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Unencumbered.

Sebring three year-old Vinland bounced back from a last start fifth in the Group II MRC Sandown Guineas to score an easy win at Sandown on Saturday.

Vinland - Darryl ShererHe handled the heavy conditions with easy to surge away and win over 1600 metres by nearly two lengths.

"It was definitely as impressive as it looked," said winning rider Andrew Mallyon.

Mallyon was back aboard the Tony McEvoy trained Vinland after riding the colt a month earlier to a maiden win at Bendigo in the three-year-old's first start back from knee surgery.

"He's got the makings of a very good horse," Mallyon said.

"He was expected to beat those today but the thing that impressed me the most was the amount of improvement he has made from when I sat on him at Bendigo to today, and also just his manners and the way he relaxed.

"He just towed me into the race and not many quicken like that on a wet track.

"I think he's definitely one for the future."

A $340,000 Inglis Premier purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing from the Blue Gum Farm draft, Vinland runs for a syndicate that includes some of Sebring's original owners and has won two of five starts.

He is the second winner for Group II placed Viking Turf Belle, a half-sister to the dams of Group II winner Mella Maria and stakes-winner Valliano.

Sebring has 34 entries for Magic Millions and seven for Inglis Classic.
