One To Watch - Hawkesbury

Mark Smith - Thursday September 9

Boasting top-class form in three starts in Melbourne at two, Kallos was expected to make short work of a field of maidens over 1100m at Hawkesbury on Thursday, and he did it in style.

Champion jockey James McDonald was swinging off the Godolphin homebred, only letting him off the leash for the final 200m.

Supporters that backed him into odds-on did not have a moment of concern. The 3yo son of Medaglia d'Oro (USA) put two lengths on the Counterattack gelding Hold On Honey with the Capitalist gelding Ka Bling a further two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Following a luckless debut fourth at Moonee Valley in January, Kallos finished fourth again behind General Beau, Anamoe, and Jigsaw in the Group III Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield.

Three weeks later, he was beaten in the last bound by Tycoon Humma in the Listed Festival of Racing 1000 at Flemington.

Kallos is the first foal of the Group II ATC Magic Night Stakes and Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Calliope.

The daughter of Exceed and Excel made just four career starts. She is a sister to last season's Group III Canonbury Stakes winner Zethus who stewards sin-binned after finishing last in the Group II Silver Slipper won by Home Affairs.

Calliope's dam Melpomene (Elusive Quality) is a half-sister to Group III Tatt's NSW Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth (Northern Meteor), out of the Group 1 Victoria Oaks heroine Bulla Borghese.

Calliope has a 2yo Lonhro filly named The Muses and a yearling colt by Lonhro.

She was not covered last spring.
