Kallos Surprises in the Danehill Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 2

Following the win of Kementari in the Gilgai Stakes, the Medaglia d'Oro (USA) colt Kallos made it running Group II victories for Godolphin in the VRC Members Danehill Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

Godolphin also had the short-priced favourite Ingratiating. While the son of Frosted (USA) laboured near the tail of the field under Damien Oliver, Fred Kersley Jnr was out and running on Kallos, who had earned a Breedent One To Watch when he broke his maiden three weeks earlier over 1100m at Hawkesbury.

The consistent General Beau (Brazen Beau) was two lengths back in second, with Bruckner (Snitzel) a short-neck back in third.

Kallos made his first three starts in Melbourne and headed north off a second to Typhoon Humma in a Listed race at Flemington in February.

Stable foreman Reg Fleming said the son of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) had little luck in Melbourne so trainer James Cummings thought he was worthy of taking his place.

“We always had a bit of an opinion of him,” Fleming said.

He was unlucky at his first start at Moonee Valley, and he ran really good up the straight here at his next race, so James thought we’d bring him down and have a go at this.”

Fred Kersley said it was a welcome change of luck.

“The last few weeks have been quite character building, but I’ve had great support from James and the Godolphin camp, Kersley said.

“This fella couldn’t have won his maiden any better last start, so it filled me with confidence coming in.

“About three months ago I probably pushed my way into Reg’s face and started doing a heap of work for him. From there, the relationship stemmed, but it is just good to get good opportunities for them and being able to deliver on the big day is more important.

“He’s a nice horse going places and  I wanted to go forward. When Lloyd’s Crown came up side I was more than happy to take the sit. He travelled well for me throughout, and at the 600m I really had to remind myself to hold on here.”

Kallos is the first foal of the Group II ATC Magic Night Stakes and Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Calliope.

The daughter of Exceed and Excel made just four career starts. She is a sister to last season's Group III Canonbury Stakes winner Zethus who stewards sin-binned after finishing last in the Group II Silver Slipper won by Home Affairs.

Calliope's dam Melpomene (Elusive Quality) is a half-sister to Group III Tatt's NSW Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth (Northern Meteor), out of the Group 1 Victoria Oaks heroine Bulla Borghese.

Calliope has a 2yo Lonhro filly named The Muses and a yearling colt by Lonhro.

She was not covered last spring.
