One To Watch - Gosford

Mark Smith - Tuesday February 4

Surely there must be some black-type in the not to distant future for Fairway Thoroughbreds talented Sangria after the daughter of I Am Invincible treated her five overmatched rivals with contempt over 1000 metres at Gosford on Tuesday.

It was the third consecutive win for Peter and Paul Snowden-trained 3yo filly who was starting for the first time since a victory over 1250 metres at Canterbury on September 25, which followed a track record breaking performance in a maiden at Hawkesbury.

Thankfully, Sangria is looking more like the finished article after several concerns earlier in her career.

She copped a suspension for her racing manners when she tailed off last when running to the outside fence in a 900 metre maiden at Newcastle on August 24, which came a fortnight after she was scratched when playing up in the barriers and needed a veterinary clearance to be permitted to race or trial again.

No such problems here. She bounced straight to the front for Kerrin McEvoy who was determined not to let the outsider Khitaamy cross him, which fired up Sangria a touch but by the turn she looked every bit the 4/7 chance she started.

Following a couple of backhanders by McEvoy, Sangria won by a widening four and a half lengths over Godolphin’s Denman gelding Lanigera with the Sepoy gelding Siege Warfare a short-half-head back in third.Sangria is looking to be worth every penny of her $650,000 price tag

“She did it nicely. It was good to see her come back and do that after showing nice form at the trials,” McEvoy said.

“I haven’t ridden her for a little while, but I know the team have been very happy with her.

“She went to the gates quite composed. We went to the front and got into a nice enough rhythm, had a little pressure from the outside horse but she gave a nice kick when I asked her at the top of the lane.

“She’s very speedy and has strengthened up quite a lot and it was good to see her do that today.”

Purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $650,000 out of the Newgate Farm draft at the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sangria is a result of a massive spend by Newgate on behalf of various entities at the 2014 Teeley Asset dispersal.

Newgate outlaid $1,500,000 for Sangria's stakes-placed dam Quench The Thirst (Encosta de Lago) and the same for her Group III winning sister Precious Lorraine, while adding her half-sisters Your Lifestyle (Hussonet) for $1.200,000, Café Scientific (More Than Ready) for $650,000 and Princess Narine (Red Ransom) for $600,000.

They are all daughters of Redoute's Choice's stakes-placed sister Monsoon Wedding whose half-sister Ten Carat Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar) also went the way of Newgate for $750,000.

Now in the ownership of Go Bloodstock, Quench The Thirst has a 2yo Sebring colt named Ahso and a yearling filly by Snitzel that will head the Newgate Farm draft at the Inglis Australia Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 152.

After foaling a filly by Merchant Navy last spring, Quench The Thirst was bred back to Russian Revolution last spring.
