Havasay Defends His Ramornie Title

Mark Smith - Wednesday July 10

In a dramatic finish to Wednesday's Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton, defending champion Havasay scored a last bound win, his first since taking the race 12 months ago.

With regular rider Matthew McGillivray in the saddle, settled Havasay settled towards the rear of the field as Whypeeo set a solid tempo up front.

Just when Jay Ford on Star Boy (Pluck)was being declared the likely winner, Havasay (Rothesay) swooped down the outside and the judge found a margin of a nose. Freddie Fox Trot (Foxwedge) was a long-neck back in third.

As Havasay's trainer Liam Birchley is banned from running horses in NSW, the 6yo gelding, for the second time, ran under the name of Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.

A $70,000 purchase from the Glenlogan Park drat at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, Havasay (pictured as a yearling ) advances his record to 9 wins, 5 seconds and 6 thirds from 41 starts with earnings of $582,950.

He is the best of two foals from as many to race out of the winning Show A Heart mare Showhama who is a half-sister to the remarkable producer to Rahy's Serenade who is the dam of seven stakes-winners in India.

Showhama's dam Shihama (Shadeed) is a sister to the champion mare Sayyedati whose five Group 1 wins included the One Thousand Guineas and Sussex Stakes, and a half-sister to 4-time Group 1 winner useful stallion Golden Snake (Danzig).

Glenlogan Park consigned a Zoustar filly out of Showhama to this year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where she was purchased for $250,000.

After having a dead foal last year, Showhama was covered by Russian Revolution.
