Invincible Record Breaker – How Did He Do It?

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 14
With two and half months of the season still to come, I Am Invincible has already broken the all-time seasonal record for Australian stakes-winners with 27 to his credit, so we thought a look at how he did it might be illuminating given that his fee of $247,500 this spring makes him the most expensive sire in the country.

I Am InvincibleThe reality as you can see below is that his record breaking haul of stakes-winners were largely conceived while he was standing at $11,000 in his first four seasons with 15 of his 27 stakes-winners aged between four and seven, a great testament to his ability to produce sound horses that train on.

His current three year-olds are from his first crop conceived off a bigger fee ($27,500) and then his two year-olds come from an even better book of mares when his fee moved up to $55,000.

Some successful stallions are given a massive leg up to start their careers in covering big books of quality mares that often carry them along way, but I Am Invincible has had to do it all himself.

He got good numbers in his early years, but not a great deal of quality given he was a modest Group III winning sprinter by a shuttle stallion that came here for four seasons and didn't exactly set the world on fire. Hindsight has shown Invincible Spirit as a champion sire in Europe and a great sire of sires, but when I Am Invincible went to stud in 2010 nobody knew that.

It just goes to show that if a stallion is good enough all he needs is mares… he will do the rest.
