Ones to Watch – Pakenham

Tara Madgwick - Thursday February 14
Two well bred three year-old fillies cast off maiden status at Pakenham on Thursday, one of them a half-sister to a Group I winner and the other out of a Group I winner.

Samoon as a yearlingPrepared by Mick Price, Fastnet rock filly Samoon strode clear to win the 1400 metre maiden by more than a length at her third start. She led all the way and will take benefit from the run.

A $600,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Widden Stud draft for Bruce Perry Bloodstock, Samoon runs for Trelawney Stud and will be a valuable addition to their broodmare band one day as she is a half-sister to Group I MRC Oakleigh Plate winner Shamal Wind and stakes-placed Sebfire.

Her dam Firemaid (USA) comes from an elite European family and is a half-sister to the grand-dam of last year’s high class two year-old colt Ten Sovereigns, winner of the Group I Newmarket Middle Park Stakes.

Firemaid has not had a foal since Samoon, but was covered late last year by Sebring.

Keeping the winning run going for exciting young sire Dundeel was the Peter Gelagotis trained filly Miss Five Hundred. She relished the step up to 1600 metres at her third start, zooming home from back in the field to win by a long neck.

Miss Five Hundred as a yearlingA $110,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Hillside Thoroughbred for Gelagotis Racing, Miss Five Hundred is the sixth winner from seven to race from Group I BRC Doomben Cup winner Cinque Cento.

Cinque Cento has not had a foal since Miss Five Hundred but was covered last year by Impending.
