Exceedingly Good Debut

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 6
Fresh from siring impressive two year-old debut stakes-winner McLaren last weekend, Darley heavy hitter Exceed and Excel was back in the frame with another debut juvenile winner at Randwick on Wednesday in Sun Patch.

Sun Patch was the most expensive yearling by Exceed and Excel sold in 2018Trained by Ron Quinton, Sun Patch had only trialled once previously and was allowed to find his feet by Andrew Adkins settling behind the main pack on the fence before cruising along in a rhythm.

With a furlong to run, Sun Patch's prospects looked forlorn, but he unleashed an explosive turn of foot to zoom right along the fence and score a half length win in the 1000 metre dash.

Runner-up Super Oasis, an Exceed and Excel filly from a half-sister to former star mare English, rattled home down the outside on debut and her effort is sure to see her start favourite when she steps out next.

An $800,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Segenhoe draft for George Moore Bloodstock, Sun Patch was the most expensive yearling by Exceed and Excel sold in 2018, but is not on the list of second acceptors for the Golden Slipper.

Bred and sold by Segenhoe, Sun Patch is a half-brother to Group III winner Taking Aim, stakes-winner Manuel and stakes-placed Witherspoon being the fourth winner from four to race from stakes-winning Hussonet (USA) mare Girl Hussler.

Girl Hussler has a yearling filly by Fastnet Rock and a Snitzel weanling colt, but missed last year to I Am Invincible.

Segenhoe have a quality draft at the Inglis Classic, click here to see them.
