Tom Baddock - Wednesday August 16

The Mark Newnham-trained Super Ex has taken his record to two wins from three starts after an impressive victory in the Casino Prince@Vinery Handicap (1200m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The son of Excites jumped cleanly and quickly settled behind the Gerald Ryan-trained Albumin which crossed from his wide draw.

Coming into the straight Super Ex loomed ($4.80) ominously outside the leader before shooting clear with a good turn of foot at the furlong to win by 2-1/4 lengths to Albumin ($5.50), with a further half-a-length back to Godolphin's fast finishing Schubert ($3.50).

"We've always had a good opinion of him," Newnham said.

"At the breeze up sale last year we looked at a stack of horses and we kept coming back to him and he's repaid us.

"He's kept improving through his preparation and I came here quietly confident and it looks like we've got a nice horse.

"He's a really relaxed horse on the track but as soon as you ask him he can deliver. As long as we look after him now he's going to develop into a really, really nice horse.

"I'll just take it week-to-week with him. This is his first prep really so he's done a really good job, we don't want to over tax him.

"If he keeps improving we'll find a nice race for him."

Tommy Berry believes although he was impressive on Wednesday there is a lot of improvement to come.

"When he got to the front he got a little bit lost so I switched the stick across to my right just to get him to switch on and once he felt that he finished off quite well," Berry said.

"Today was a very competitive field. Mark has done a great job with him, he's placed him in nice easy company early on and he's obviously shown he's got ability.

"His first start he was caught wide the whole way and the horses that beat him on that occasion have both come out and won on a Saturday I think, and obviously he beat them quite well last start.

"He's doing everything on ability at the moment, he still hasn't got a clue what's going on so it is very exciting for the future."
