Maskiell back to winning ways at Devonport

Brad Waters - Monday August 14

It took comeback jockey Jason Maskiell a meeting to get his eye in before he booted home his first winner in more than three years at Devonport on Sunday.

Drug issues kept Maskiell away from the races between November 2013 and the August 6 meeting at the Devonport Tapeta track but the Tasmanian rider could not bag a win on his first day back.

Maskiell took eight rides at Devonport on Sunday and got the money aboard the Paul Hill-trained Sudden Shock in the Tasracing Off The Track Maiden (1150m), doing the job for punters on the $4.10 equal favourite.

Maskiell backed up that performance with another success two races later aboard Willby Rules for the Nigel Schuuring stable in the Birdcage Tavern Functions Class 2 Hcp (1150m).

Meanwhile, the Devonport meeting also proved memorable for 4kg-claiming apprentice Teagan Voorham, who rode four winners from six rides.

Voorham recorded the first win of her career aboard Vandemeer in the opening race of the day before notching three more victories, including the last two races of the meeting.

Voorham was lucky to take her last ride of the day after escaping injury when falling from winner Secrets She Has in the eighth race of the day before making the most of a pick-up ride to win the last on Rougeau.
