New Star for Artie

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday June 6
Successful sire ARTIE SCHILLER (USA), who returns to Victoria this season, unearthed another potential star and completed an outstanding week of winners with lightly raced Hawkish strolling to an impressive three length win in the Gr 2 Penn Mile, on turf in the US on Sunday.

Artie SchillerIt was the seventh winner for the week for Artie Schiller from limited starters and took ARTIE SCHILLER'S resume to 41 stakeswinners.

Hawkish was having only his fourth race start and coming off a maiden win and stakes placing at his earlier two runs, the three year old demolished a smart field, running away to an easy win and will likely target the Gr 1 Belmont Derby Invitational on July 7.

On the Australian front Artie Schiller posted eight winners in the past week week to complete an outstanding month of 16 winners.

His winning form has continued into June with a winning double on Wednesday highlighted by promising three year-old Mad for Art, who posted his fourth win from seven starts for the Bjorn Baker stable at Canterbury.

ARTIE SCHILLER returns to Victoria this season at STOCKWELL THOROUGHBREDS, Diggers Rest where he stood before transferring to AQUIS FARM in the Hunter Valley for the past two seasons.

Champion 3YO Flying Artie is one of 41 SW's for Artie SchillerHis move to NSW followed from the outstanding success he achieved from his earlier books in Victoria, headlined by the World Champion 3YO FLYING ARTIE. FLYING ARTIE was retired to stud last year after an outstanding two and three year old career and served a full book of quality mares at Newgate Stud.

ARTIE SCHILLER has been purchased and syndicated by Victorian interests and returns to stand at a fee of $13,200 (inc GST) under the care of Mike and Brodie Becker who were instrumental in bringing him to Australia in 2007.

From a modest mare base, ARTIE SCHILLER was second only to Written Tycoon in the first season sires honours in Victoria but elevated himself to prominence by taking the title of Australia's Leading Second Season Sire.

"We rested Artie from shuttle service in his fourth season as we thought that was in the best interests of his welfare but sadly it had a detrimental effect on his career subsequently with a crop missing, causing him to drop off the commercial radar in this very competitive market," said Stockwell's Brodie Becker.

"However, he bounced back to find Flying Artie as his second Australian Group One winner following the earlier success of Gai Waterhouse's Laser Hawk at the highest level."

The success of both his Group One winners highlight the versatility of ARTIE SCHILLER, one a precocious and speedy younger colt and the other a classic three year old winning the 2012 Rosehill Guineas before a gallant third in the Australian Derby after suffering a career ending injury.

Throughout his career at stud, ARTIE SCHILLER has built an impressive 70% winner to runner ratio and a very high 5% stakeswinner to runner percentage. His progeny earnings have now exceeded $50 million.

His other Australian stakeswinners include Good Standing, I Love It, Vain Queen, Lady Melksham, Daytona Grey, Secret Liaison, Dornier and the current highly promising staying mare Wheal Leisure.

He is also the sire of three Group One winners in the US with Hawkish looking a real chance to stretch that number.

ARTIE SCHILLER's yearlings have always been strong sellers at the major sales and again this year have reached to $200,00.

"It was obviously a sad day when commercial pressures saw Artie move to NSW but the reality is that he has received two lovely books of mares which will help ensure his future racetrack success and sales presence," said Brodie Becker

"We are delighted to have him back and provide this state with a quality proven stallion at an affordable fee."
