Fastnet Rock’s Comin’ Through Wins Doomben Cup

Tara Madgwick - Saturday May 19
The decision to geld a blue-blooded son of champion sire Fastnet Rock is never one taken lightly, but with a second in the Group I ATC Doncaster Mile and now a well -deserved win in the Group I BRC Doomben Cup, it's proven a lucrative one for Comin' Through.

Comin' Through Prepared by Chris Waller, Comin' Through has always shown serious ability and won the Group III VRC Carbine Club Stakes at three, but subsequent preparations failed to deliver the sort of success anticipated, so earlier this year he was gelded.

A homebred for Sir Owen Glenn's Go Bloodstock, Comin' Through was partnered by Michael Walker, who got the best from the four year-old, holding out his stablemate Egg Tart, a dual Group I winner last season, to win the 2000 metre contest by a short neck.

Walker has ridden Comin' Through in most of his starts as part of being a retained rider for high profile owner Sir Owen Glenn and revealed he was "never confident" at any stage of the contest.

"I know this bloke inside out and he just wouldn't travel for me," Walker told Sky Racing.

"We had a good run, but I was off the bit the whole way.

"I ended up having to just inject him from the half mile. I gave him a hit and just said 'go mate' because holding him up he wasn't going to do it.

"Doing it for the boss Sir Owen makes it all that much better, when you have someone who you ride for and you get these big wins so I couldn't be happier right now."

Fastnet RockA half-brother to Sir Owen Glenn's $7million earner Criterion, Comin' Through has the overall record of six wins and five placings from 17 starts with prizemoney of $1.6 million.

She is the second Group I winne for her dam Mica's Pride, a blue hen that has also left us Group II winner Varenna Miss and stakes-winner Silently among her nine winners from nine foals to race.

Peter and Paul Snowden train the two year-old full brother to Comin' Through called Sir Owen, who trialled encouragingly earlier this week and may soon become winner number 10 for his famous dam.

Turning 20 this year, Mica's Pride produced a filly by Sebring last spring that is a full sister to $7million earner Criterion. She is not in foal at present having missed to Snitzel last year.

The family appears at the upcoming Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale where Newgate Farm will offer Lot 1280, Our Pride and Joy, a winning half-sister by Canny Lad to Criterion and Comin' Through that is in foal to Dissident.

Comin' Through is the 35th Group I winner for champion sire Fastnet Rock, who nearly added a 36th to the tally when his speedy daughter Missrock finished a brave second in the Group I SAJC Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville on Saturday.
