One to Watch - Doomben

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday September 17

There was a short priced favourite in the 1200m fillies and mares maiden at Doomben on Wednesday and the three year-old daughter of Wootton Bassett (GB) duly saluted for the Jim Mason stable.

A homebred for Sheralee Racing, Shadwell Lane was a close second at her first two starts last month at Eagle Farm and Doomben and with race fitness and experience on her side this time was able to break the ice.

Given a patient ride by Cejay Graham in a fast run race, Shadwell Lane warmed to the task after turning for home and was doing her best work on the line as she rounded them all up to cruise past and win by half a length.

“She’s a filly that has shown us quite a bit and has plenty of upside,” said Jim Mason.

Shadwell Lane is the first foal of stakes-placed So You Think mare Word for Word, who was bought in foal to Wootton Bassett at the 2022 Inglis Chairman’s Sale by Sheralee Estate / Clarke Bloodstock for $650,000.

Word for Word is a half-sister t stakes-placed Cryptogram from Group I placed Wordplay, who comes from the family of Group I winners Fiveandahalfstar and El Castello.

Word for Word has a two year-old colt to follow by Pierro.

Shadwell Lane is the fifth winner of the season for Wootton Bassett, who is back at Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $385,000.
