Broadsiding Rolls The Dice For 4th G1 Win

Craig Tompson - Saturday March 22

Broadsiding went from the cheap seats to the balcony on the roll of a dice and a tough display following saw him get Group I win number 4 in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

The Race

Broadsiding started a rapidly easing favourite on a track where the rails and near the pace was the perceived pattern of the day.

James McDonald went forward from his wide gate to work in with that pattern but met no joy, posted wide back to midfield, so in a roll of the dice took a forward move and finished in a good spot, tracking the lead one off the fence, albeit after doing more work than would be comfortable.

Aeliana was midfield on the fence getting the best run of all and took full advantage, launching late to just miss, ultimately going down in a photo while Swiftfalcon fought strongly for third after a mid-race rapid fire move.

The Quotes

James Cummings:

He's a class colt and class carries a long way. I suppose from the draw, he's had to do a fair bit of work, and James just rode him with confidence and stuck to his plan, which was essentially to keep an open mind and not give away too much ground today on a track like this.

“He’s probably not a genuine 2,000 metre horse, but he's a brilliant horse, and he's got up and won the Rosehill Guineas, so fair play to him. He's probably done it the hard way.”

“He's a really important horse for our business. He's got a lot of his father in him, and Too Darn Hot would be an incredibly popular sire if he was coming back.”

James McDonald on Broadsiding

It was one of those moments where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, so we rolled the dice, had a crack, paid off, but like James said, there was no real plan, just go with the flow.

“At the first bend, I thought, oh no, then one worked out, I ended up with a one-one, and it was a good win, a really good win.”

Tyler Schiller on Swiftfalcon

“Very gallant run. He is possibly suspect at the 2000m especially when he has to make a move when we have to get within striking distance of the favourite. I thought he did a really good job.

“He was still strong late. Has come up against a couple of cracking horses. Back to a mile in the Doncaster will suit him perfectly.

The Horse

It was Group One win number four for Broadsiding, now with a range from 1400m to 2000m - 2025 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (Gr.1) 2000m; 2024 James Squire Golden Rose (Gr.1) 1400m; 2024 Ladbrokes J.J. Atkins (Gr.1) 1600m; 2024 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (Gr.1) 1600m.

He is the lone runner from two live foals from the Street Cry (IRE)  mare Speedway, who made 11 starts for three Godolphin trainers, John O'Shea, Darren Beadman and James Cummings. She won at Wyong and Newcastle and placed a further three times.

Sadly, Speedway had only two colt foals before she died in 2022.

Her half-sister Flit (Lonhro) won the Group 1 MRC One Thousand Guineas, Group II ATC Light Fingers Stake, and Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes, and her dam Glissade (Redoute's Choice) is a stakes-placed daughter of the Group III AJC Breeders' Classic winner Steflara (Zabeel).

Broadsiding is one of 10 southern hemisphere stakes winners for Godolphin’s Too Darn Hot who will romp in the Australian second season sires title this season with 36 winners, 10 stakes winners and over $7million to date.
