Broadsiding Joins The Elite - So Who Are They?

Broadsiding put himself in elite company when winning the Group I ATC Golden Rose on Saturday as a multiple Group I winning juvenile to train on and win again at the elite level at three, so who are these history makers that he now stands beside?

The media love to seize on the phenomenon of star juveniles that don’t train on, but that’s not always the case and over the past 40 years there have been some remarkable two year-olds that have remained remarkable at three.

There were 222 horses in total during the past 40 years that won at G1 level at two in that time bearing in mind we had more juvenile G1 races back in the day. The QTC Sires Produce was downgraded to G2 in 2006 and the VRC Sires Produce Stakes in 2005, while the WATC Karrakatta Plate was downgraded in 1999 after being elevated to G1 in 1985.

Of those juvenile G1 winners in the past 40 years, only 33 were multiple G1 2YO winners and the horses below are those that won two or more G1 races at two and then came out to win at G1 level at three as Broadsiding has done.

Interestingly in the list below, the Darley / Godolphin breeding operation in Australia accounts for five of these superstar horses – Sepoy, Helmet, Guelph, Broadsiding and Pierro, who was famously sold as a weanling and did his racing for Gai Waterhouse before retiring to stud at Coolmore where he is still on the roster at a fee of $55,000.

Footnote: If you, like me are thinking, hang on, didn’t Gai’s Triple Crown winner Dance Hero go on and win a G1, you would be right, he did, but not as a three year-old. He won the G1 VRC Salinger Stakes at four.
