Figures Rise at Strong Magic Millions Adelaide Sale

Media Release - Wednesday March 14
The upward trend of Magic Millions' yearling sales in 2018 continued this week at the Adelaide Yearling Sale with increases across the board at the successful two day auction.

Vibrant selling on Day Two helped givethe popular South Australian saleimpressive rises in gross, average, median and clearance as compared to the strong sale held last year.

A colt by Zoustar presented by Baramul Stud was the top seller on Day Two, selling to leading Perth based bloodstock agent John Chalmers for $190,000.

Catalogued as Lot 269, he is the sixth living foal of the Sydney winning Danehill mare Amalienborg - a sister to Blue Diamond Stakes winner Danelagh, the dam of Group One winners Vengeance of Rain and Dizelle (dam of Pinot).

"Apart from being by Zoustar and he's the flavour of the month, he comes from a family well known to us in WesternAustralia - through Palatious the second dam who won the Perth Cup and that whole family is one that Keith Biggs has made very, very successful," Chalmers said.

"He was a lovely colt and I thought he might even make a bit more than that. "

Six lots later Chalmerssigned for a Spirit of Boom filly from the Dehere mare Animated who was offered as part of the Eureka Stud-Cornerstone Stud Partnership. She was sold for $100,000.

"He (Spirit of Boom) has certainly come from nowhere," Chalmers said. "But the thing is, he's throwing really good types and that's helped them to run."

"They're athletic horses and one thing I have noticed about them is that they have wonderful temperaments."

The Zoustar and Spirit of Boom purchases for Chalmers helped ease the frustration of yesterday's Day One sale when he ended the day as underbidder on both the top lots - the $300,000 Spirit of Boom colt and $210,000 Nicconi colt.

Chalmers' purchaseswere among eight lots today to sell for six figures to bring the sale total to 17 lots.

All up Book Onegrossed over $11.1 million for 331 lots sold at an increased average price of $44,115 and a healthy clearance rate of 84 per cent. The median price of $35,000 was up from $30,000 last year. This year's gross is the highest achieved in Adelaide since 2007.

Later in the day the Book Two sale grossed $1,463,000 for 123 lots sold with a top price of $62,500 for Ambergate Farm's colt by Husson (Lot 361). The clearance rate was a fabulous 90 per cent.

"We had our best ever buying bench here - the international buyers as well as the return of good friends of past years ensured for a really gratifying result," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"The market probably strengthenedtoday and we have a clearance rate of 84 per cent which is fantastic."

"The average of $44,000 is significantly up on last year and a gross which is up some $900,000."

"Vendors are extremelypleased and the results showed thatbuyers had great confidence in the sale. The new two day format worked extremely well with strong prices continuing through to the Book Two sale late in the afternoon."

"We've had some pleasing results through all of our sales this year and the trend continued here in Adelaide and we're looking forward to next week (on the Gold Coast)."

As Bowditch indicated the focus of the bloodstock industry now switches to Queensland where the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale will be held on Monday and Tuesday.

"There's a high volume of people coming to the sale due to the fact we have a significant number of Spirit of Boom yearlings. We have a great catalogue all round and we're looking forward to getting up there and getting into it on Monday."
