Deep Field's Depth Of Character Claims the Tattersalls Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday June 29

Depth Of Character surprised the stable when winning a midweeker at Canterbury on May 29 but showed that was no fluke when finishing third in the Oxlade Stakes at Eagle Farm.

The 2-year-old son of Deep Field continued his upward trajectory when coming from back in the field to land the Listed Impressu Print Group Tattersall's Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Ridden by Tommy Sherry for Annabel Neasham, Depth Of Character had it all before him on the turn for home when trapped between runners back in the field.

When the field opened up at the 200m, Depth Of Character finished solidly to defeat the Exceed And Excel colt Steel Strike by one and a quarter lengths, with the Yesy Yes Yes filly Maili a half-neck back in third.

Annabel Neasham said the son of Deep Field had done enough for the preparation.

"He's a nice colt, I presume he'll go to the paddock off the back of that," Neasham said.

"He’s going to be a lovely three-year-old, and I think the mile will not be a problem for him.

“With his couple of runs up here, he’s just going to come on so much from that. He had to race in restricted room today, and he had to take a gap to get through late, and he was very impressive. He’s a really exciting colt for the stable.”

Tommy Sherry said Depth Of Character is going the right way.

“He’s a quality horse, I had a lot of confidence in him today,” Sherry said.

“He ran really well here two weeks ago, he showed nice progression here today. The 1400m really suited him.

“It was a bit of a muddling race through the mid-pack, but when he balanced up and got through, he really let down well.

“He’s got a lovely attitude. I think he’ll be even better in six months. He was well placed today in a race like that, and it’s always good to get the win for a good bunch of owners.”
