Depth Of Character Dazzles on Debut

The 2-year-old Deep Field colt Depth Of Character left a huge impression on debut when coming from last for a dramatic win in Wednesday’s The Agency Real Estate Maiden Hcp (1250m) at Canterbury.

Ridden by Tom Sherry for Annabel Neasham, Depth Of Character was given time to find his feet. Switched widest of all on straightening, the son of Deep Field picked off runner after runner to win by a length from the 3-year-old Per Incanto filly Grassburn, with the 2-year-old Too Darn Hot (GB) colt Shanwah back in third.

“I think he is a smart colt and was quite big in the market for what he has shown,” Neasham said.

 “I like how he came here on debut, sat last around a tight track, and showed that turn of foot.”

Depth Of Character was a $180,000 purchase for his trainer from The Chase draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Bred by China Horse Club, Depth Of Character is the second winner from as many foals for the Power (GB) mare Caricature, who was placed in the Group III  Hawkes Bay Lowland Stakes and was fourth in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks.

Depth Of Character a $180,000 Magic Millions yearling

A $600,000 purchase for China Horse Club at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka, Caricature has a weanling filly by Zoustar and was covered by Russian Revolution last spring.

Depth Of Character is the sixth 2-year-old winner of the season for Newgate Farm’s pensioned DeepField.
