No Stopping Wishlor Lass in Tesio Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 28

One of just twenty-two live foals from the lone season of the Medaglia d'Oro stallion Mshawish (USA), the 5-year-old mare Wishlor Lass continues to build on a fantastic strike rate, going coast to coast in the Group III Powerflo Solutions Tesio Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Ridden by Damian Lane for Symon Wilde, Wishlor Lass was untroubled to defeat the 5-year-old Not A Single Doubt mare Thalassophile by one and a quarter lengths with a half-head back to the 5-year-old Zoffany mare Osmose back in third.

With her second stakes success, Wishlaw Lass advances her record to six wins from eight starts with earnings of $406,400.

Stable representative Bill Wilde indicated the Matriarch Stakes looks the preferred option over Empire Rose for her next start.

"Symon is at home. He's very shy. He's doing a Paddy Payne, he likes to stay home," Bill Wilde said.

"She’s an absolute beauty, and we’ve got the mare, so there is a few progeny coming along.

“A lot of those really good mares, they keep on producing so maybe there is one who’ll be as good as her.

“She’s got a great physique. A couple of good ones we had earlier were too big and too heavy. They broke down and had little issues but were very talented.

“She’s just a perfect shape. She’s big, athletic and has got a lovely stayers (build). She’ll run in a couple of week's time at Flemington.

“I don’t think leading on her is her best asset. She is better taking a sit and running home. She did that a bit at Caulfield but she was very good today.”

A homebred for her trainer, Wishlor Lass is the best of six winners from as many to race for the Bianconi mare Lorna’s Lass, who is also the dam of the Group III South Australia Fillies Classic third, Skyway Star (Americain).

Now in New Zealand, Lorna’s Lass has a 2-year-old colt and yearling filly by Raise The Flag (GB). She was covered by Ancient Spirit (GER) last spring.

The winner of the Group 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap and Group 1 Donn Handicap in the United States, the Group II Zabeel Mile in Dubai, and the Listed Prix De Tourgeville in France, Mshawish shuttled to Swettenham Stud in 2017.
