Lean Mean Machine Filly Material Dreams Impresses on Debut

Ridden by Billy Egan for Nick Ryan, Material Dreams was tardy to begin and travelled three pairs back on the fence.

When eased out to clear running in the straight, the daughter of Lean Mean Machine powered home to defeat the Epaulette filly Nightingale by two and a quarter length, with the Exceed And Excel filly Exceed To Ambition three-quarters of a length back in third.

“She had a lovely run, cantering along off the bridle. We got the splits at the right time,” Egan said.

“Nick’s a good trainer and educator of a horse. He has a good team behind him, so she came here in good shape. He said it might be beyond her to win at her first start, although she was going well. The main thing was for her to have  a good experience, and we will see where we go from there.” Bred by Rob Dunnett’s Equine Ventures, Material Dreams was a $55,000 purchase for Greg and Jackie Lewis from the Collingrove Stud draft at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

She is the first runner for the winning Darci Brahma mare Lincoln’s Sunset, a sister to 6-time winner Westsouthwest, who placed in the Group 1 Queensland Derby and Group 1 South Australian Derby, and 2-time winner Aurora Lights, who was third in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks.

A sister to Material Dreams died after birth in 2021. After foaling a filly by Rubick last spring, Lincoln’s Sunset visited Royal Meeting (IRE).

Material Dreams is the second winner, after the Doomben winner Freeman, from five runners from the first crop by Aquis Farm’s multiple Group II winner, and Group 1 Coolmore Stud third Lean Mean Machine.

The handsome son of Zoustar stands the 2023 season at Aquis Farm for a fee of $13,200.
