Super Smink Super Slick in WA Sires

Mark Smith - Sunday April 30

The Super One filly Super Smink proved a class above her opponents in Saturday's Group III Quayclean WA Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) to stamp her claim as the best two-year-old in the west.

With trophies for the Group II Karakatta Plate and Magic Millions WA 2yo Classic already on the mantelpiece, the Dan Morton-trained filly started an odds-favourite in Saturday's feature at Ascot.

She received the perfect steer from Chris Parnham, tucked away third on the fence before maneuvering out to clean air on straightening.

The daughter of Super One was untroubled to hold the challenge of the Brave Smash (JPN) filly Brave Strike by two and a quarter lengths, with the Playing God colt Investmentstrategy a neck back in third.

Super Smink advances her record to three wins, a second, and a third from five starts with earnings of $547,690.

With Dan Morton at Morphettville to watch his filly, She's Fit, narrowly defeated in the Australasian Oaks,  Morton's stable foreman Vince Collica said he had some concerns when Super Smink was bottled up.

"I had my heart in my mouth, and I said, 'Chris get out of there', but with her turn of foot, once she was out, it was all over," Collica said.

"She pinged the gates and rode the speed, and Chric took bad luck out of the equation. She is a special filly.

"From day dot, she just oozed class. She has a first-rate temperament, and we wished we had a stable full of them.

"She has enormous upside. Look out for next season; wherever they decide to put her, she will be very competitive."

A $45,000 purchase for Morton Racing from the Forest View Farm draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, Super Smink is the first foal and only runner for the Snitzel mare Sminky Shorts.

The lightly raced Sminky Shorts is a three-quarter sister to Listed stakes-winner and Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes and Listed ATC Breeders' Plate runner-up Detective (Snitzel) out of a half-sister to Group 1 WATC Railway stakes heroine, Covertly (Metal Storm).

Sminky Shorts has a yearling colt by Sessions named No Short Man. Her I'm All The Talk foal was born dead last spring, and Sminky Shorts was given the season off.

After beginning his career at Newgate Farm, Super One stands at Lincoln Farm, where he covered 51 mares last spring for $16,500.
