Super Smink a Superstar for Super One

Mark Smith - Sunday April 16

The Super One filly Super Smink turned the tables on her WATC Gimcrack Stakes conqueror Live To Tell emphatically in Saturday's Group II Amelia Park-Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot.

Ridden by Chris Parnham for Dan Morton, Super Smink, like  Live To Tell, was well back in the field in the early stages.

When Parnham released the brakes, the daughter of Super One accelerated impressively to defeat the Territories (IRE) filly Live To Tell by two lengths, with the Written By gelding Ripcord a further three and a quarter length back in third.

The winner of the valuable Magic Millions WA 2yo Classic (RL) in February, Super Smink advances her record to two wins, a second, and a third from four starts with earnings of $438,090.

It was the first win in Perth's 2yo feature for trainer and jockey.

"We have had a seamless prep with this filly, and I was confident coming here that we had her bang on," Morton said.

"I couldn't fault her work during the week. They just don't work any better than that.

"I greatly respect Simon's filly (Live To Tell) but was very confident."

Chris Parnham said he was on a filly at the top of her game.

"She is a super filly. The improvement she made from the last start to today is enormous," Parnham said.

"Even though she just missed out last start, I think she was a four-length better horse today.

"I was a little further back than I thought I might be but got in the three deep with cover line, and when I let her go, she motored to the line.

"It is a great training effort to get her to peak for the day.

"She is a top-class filly, and who knows where she could end up."

A $45,000 purchase for Morton Racing from the Forest View Farm draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, Super Smink is the first foal and only runner for the Snitzel mare Sminky Shorts.

Retired after finishing unplaced in a 1000m maiden at Bunbury at her only start, Sminky Shorts hails from a family that has performed with distinction in the West.

The daughter of Snitzel is a three-quarter sister to Listed stakes-winner and Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes and Listed ATC Breeders' Plate runner-up Detective (Snitzel) out of a half-sister to Group 1 WATC Railway stakes heroine, Covertly (Metal Storm).

Sminky Shorts has a yearling colt by Sessions named No Short Man. Her I'm All The Talk foal was born deceased last spring.

Lincoln Farm's I Am Invincible stallion Super One has enjoyed a super start to 2023. His near $1,000,000 earner Another One captured the Listed National Sprint at Canberra in March, while Embeller was runner-up in the Group III Bow Mistress Stakes.

In the Group III Vain Stakes at Caulfield last spring, Super One's flying son Alpha One fell just short of his fourth consecutive win when edged out by an up-and-comer named Giga Kick.

After beginning his career at Newgate Farm, Super One stands at Lincoln Farm, where he covered 51 mares last spring for $16,500.
