One to Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 22

Godolphin had a short priced favourite in the 1200m three year-old maiden at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, but a first starter for Pierro spoiled the party with a debut victory.

Trained by Mark Newnham, Cool Jakey had shown nice ability in two trials this year and was anticipated to run well with Tyler Shiller in the saddle.

He enjoyed a great run in transit sitting just outside the leader and let down with a good turn of foot to skip clear and win by three-quarters of a length over the favourite Pereille.

“From the time he arrived today he hasn’t turned a hair, he’s got here in a relaxed fashion just as he is at home in the stables,” said Mark Newnham.

“He jumped well and travelled where we thought he would and gave plenty when challenged, so all in all a thoroughly professional performance.

“His Racing League owners probably doubled the crowd at Warwick Farm today and he got a big cheer so it’s good for them to get a win with a first starter.”

Cool Jake was bred and sold by Newhaven Park.

A $260,000 Magic Millions purchase for The Racing League from the Newhaven Park draft, Cool Jakey runs for the NSW Tycoons syndicate.

He is the first winner for Cool Snitzel, a metro winning three-quarter sister to stakes-winner Zupacool from the family of Group I WA Derby winners Markus Maximus.

Pierro was in the news last weekend when his progressive colt Osipenko won the Group II ATC Hobartville Stakes.
