Throm Bone Gets Thronum Off the Mark

Mark Smith - Saturday June 25

Widden Stud’s Snitzel stallion Thronum is off the mark with Throm Bone running down the highly regarded Deep Impact (JPN) filly Ghaanati in Saturday’s Neds Punters Toolbox Hcp (1100m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Will Price for Jerome Hunter, Thron Bone travelled just off the pace and when Price pressed the button the son of Thronum accelerated brilliantly to run down the erratic Ghaanati by three-quarters of a length.

The Shalaa (IRE) colt Hoofs Don’t Lie was a length back in third.

Thron Bone showed ability from day one, finishing fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview won by Daumier.

Off the scene for nineteen weeks, Thron Bone was a fast-finishing third behind She Dances at Sandown-Hillside on June 11.

“He showed a lot of promise in the autumn and he was just a bit too immature so I gave him a little break and I thought we’ll try and get a race in the winter time and it's paid off,” Hunter said.

“The best part is he’s still got a lot more to learn, he had his head up and still raced a bit green. Once the penny drops, I think we’ve got quite a nice horse.

“I always knew he had ability it’s just maturity-wise we’ll see how he copes when he gets home.”

Price said he was impressed with the way Thron Bone finished the race off.

"Jerome said we’ll try and use the gate a bit today, he jumped smartly and I was able to get into a beautiful spot trailing the leaders,” Price said.

“On the corner, he was still travelling really well, and I could see everything else coming off the bridle bar the favourite. I thought if she kicks she’ll be hard to beat but to his credit, he stuck to his guns and was super.”

A $200,000 purchase for Rich River Meat Exports Pty Ltd from the Sun Stud draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premer Yearling Sale, Thron Bone carries the colours of Graeme Gathercole’s Graebar Park.

He is the most expensive yearling by Thronum sold at public auction.

Thron Bone a $200,000 Inglis Premier yearling

Thron Bone is the second foal and first winner for Thorsborne a 4-time winning daughter of Hinchinbrook.

Purchased by Andrew Williams bloodstock for $50,000 at the 2017 Inglis Chairmans Sale, Thorsborne is a sister to Group II ATC Skyline Stakes winner Diamond Tathagata and a half-sister to dual Listed winner Ancestry (The Brothers War).

Graeme Gathercole purchased Thorsborne’s weanling Fiorente filly for $8,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, while Hyam Racing/Cameron Cooke Bloodstock needed just $5,000 to take home Thorsborne’s yearling colt by Palentino at the Adelaide Magic Millions.

Thorsborne was covered by Trapeze Artist last spring.

The winner of the Group II MVRC Australia Stakes, Thronum stands at Widden Stud, Victoria for the forthcoming season at a fee of $7,700.
