Hungry Heart Retires to Yulong

Media Release - Wednesday June 22

After a sparkling career on the track, the Yulong-bred, raised and owned mare, Hungry Heart (Frankel {GB} x Harlech {GB}) has been retired and will take her place alongside her own dam Harlech (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the Yulong broodmare band.

Hungry Heart will be covered by Written Tycoon this spring.

Trained throughout her career by Chris Waller, the daughter of Frankel landed four of her career starts, spearheaded by her victories in the G1 Vinery Stud S. and G1 ATC Oaks, while she also landed the G2 Sweet Embrace S. as a juvenile which has seen her accrue AU$1,758,575 in career prizemoney.

In her nine starts as a three-year-old, Hungry Heart was three-times second placed in the G2 Furious S., G2 Tea Rose S. and G1 Flight S., before returning in the autumn to win the G2 Phar Lap S. She showed her true ability coming from last to score in the G1 Vinery Stud S., before following up a fortnight later with a dominant victory in the G1 ATC Oaks, becoming the eighth horse to complete that race double.

From her racetrack success, Hungry Heart claimed the title of 2020-2021 Australian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly at the Australian Racehorse of the Year Awards. She beat 10 other Group 1-level nominees including VRC Oaks winner Personal, Flight S. and Champion S, winner Montefilia, Coolmore Stud S. winner September Run and Thousand Guineas winner Odeum.

Hungry Heart as a yearling, she was bred and raised by Yulong.

“Our aim at Yulong is to raise elite Champion racehorses,” said Yulong’s Racing, Sales and Nominations Manager, Troy Stephens.

“Hungry Heart, having been raised at our Nagambie base, gives our team a great deal of confidence in our systems and way we are raising our stock.”

She is out of the Pivotal mare Harlech (GB), who was sourced by Yulong at the 2016 Tattersalls July Sale and mated in Southern Hemisphere time to Juddmonte’s champion sire Frankel, producing Hungry Heart.

Harlech is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Maamora while Hungry Heart’s second dam is the Listed winner Zoowraa and her third dam, Beraysim, was also successful at stakes level.

“We would like to thank Kerrin McEvoy, strapper Steph Laraud, Chris Waller and his entire team for everything they’ve done for Hungry Heart during her racing career,” said Troy.

With her rich international pedigree and an outstanding cross that has proven to have great success, Hungry Heart will be now covered by Written Tycoon this breeding season, and we are incredibly excited for her to be returning to Yulong Stud to continue her second career as a broodmare.
