Vancouver 2YO Wins for Darby at Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Saturday June 11

Darby Racing and Bjorn Baker have already enjoyed success with Vancouver, who is the sire of their Golden Eagle contender Overpass and the Woodside Park based Golden Slipper winner is also the sire of their latest 2YO winner Wingardium.

Wingardium finished second on debut at Goulburn last month behind her stablemate Emilia Romagna, who was sent out favourite at Randwick for the 1100m open juvenile event.

Email Romagna ended up in fourth place while Wingardium surged home over the top of her rivals under Dylan Gibbons toto win by half a length.

The victory gave star apprentice Dylan Gibbons his 100th winner of the season.

"It's not a bad way to do it," Gibbons said.

"I was a bit worried early because the plan was to be in the first four and we got skittled out of the gates and I thought, oh well, I've got to go back to Plan B.

"I was getting worried because the saddle slipped back on a two-year-old and I thought we were out of play.

"But once I gave her a bit of a slap-up and got her into the bridle, I thought I was always going to run on, but I didn't know if she had too much to do.

"She is obviously a promising horse for the future."

Wingardium as a yearling.

A modest $35,000 Inglis HTBA May Yearling Sale purchase for Darby Racing from the draft of Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Wingardium has already banked nearly $90,000 from her first two starts!

Wingardium is the second winner from stakes-placed Magic Albert mare Leviosa, who comes from the family of former brilliant 2YO Clan O’Sullivan, a Group II winner that won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and was second in the Golden Slipper.

Vancouver has relocated to Woodside Park in Victoria and stands this spring at a fee of $15,400.
