Great Southern Concludes Stunning Inglis Sales Season

Media Release - Friday June 10

The Great Southern Sale today concluded with fireworks in the ring, bringing an end to the Inglis Breeding Stock Sales Series which has been crowned “the best ever’’.

In the weanling market alone the Australian Weanling Sale and Great Southern Weanling Sale grossed a combined $25,082,500, a remarkable 25% year-on-year jump.

The Great Southern Weanling Sale finished with a flurry today, with its gross of $12,017,500 the highest ever recorded.

At the sale’s conclusion, 45 weanlings had sold for $100,000 or more – a 41% increase on last year - while 10 sold for $200,000 or more, a 43% year-on-year jump.

$250,000 So You Think filly from Blackline

One of those was the Day 2 topper, a So You Think x Blackline filly of Musk Creek Farm’s, which sold to Weanling Solutions for $250,000.

The filly (pictured), offered as part of the supplementary catalogue, will be re-offered as a yearling at a select sale in 2023.

“She’s a really nice filly by a hot sire who throws especially nice fillies, she’s got a great page and was a great type so she was an obvious buy for us. That said, $250,000 was our last bid,’’ Rob Roulston of Weanling Solutions said.

“It’s been such a strong market, the strongest sale I’ve ever been to. I thought the weanlings in Sydney were strong… but for what was here, it really has been incredibly strong.

“The plan now is to put this filly back through the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale or the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale next year, given her great page and type.’’

Musk Creek’s David Kobritz added: “We were delighted, it was a fantastic price. She was the best of ours and she sold accordingly.

“We had a $200,000 reserve on her, she had 12 X-Ray hits, had been out of her box 80 or 90 times, a lot of repeat inspections and she sold very well as a result.

“The sale was just so strong overall, some of the weanlings were going for yearling prices and we’re glad we got involved in this market.’’

Second-top lot honours on Day 2 were shared, with a Too Darn Hot x Heart Skipt A Beat colt of Two Bays Farm and a Toronado x Minetti colt of Rushton Park’s both realising $200,000.

They were purchased by Mitchell Bloodstock and Bahen Bloodstock respectively.

The Minetti colt topped off a fantastic sale for Rushton Park, who ended as clear leading vendor by aggregate – for a second consecutive year - with $1,479,000 grossed from 20 weanlings sold, including four for $200,000 or more.

“It’s been a big few days for us, a big week really, it’s been fantastic,’’ Rushton Park’s David Johnson said.

“We’ve topped the sale by aggregate two years in a row now and we’ll be back to make it the trifecta in 2023.’’

The Great Southern Broodmare Sale, which followed the weanling sale this afternoon, was also a success, topped by the Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds-offered Scarlet Moretta (Fastnet Rock x Venetian Lady) – offered IF to Too Darn Hot – which sold to Fairhill Farm for $260,000.

The purchase came off the back of a success story at last month’s Australian Weanling Sale at Riverside for Fairhill.

“We sold a weanling by Too Darn Hot for $320,000 at Inglis a few weeks ago and the dam, Majesty, was by Fastnet Rock, so we identified this mare selling today and really wanted to get her,’’ Fairhill’s Mike O’Donnell said.

“It was a lot more than we were expecting to pay, I can tell you that, but she was a lovely walking Fastnet Rock mare, a 2YO winner herself and the foal will go through the Inglis Weanling Sale next year.’’

This week’s results capped an exceptional sales season for Inglis, much to the delight of Chief Executive of Bloodstock, Sebastian Hutch.

“To have sold more than $320m worth of yearlings, which is a market-leading figure, and more than $25m worth of weanlings, another market-leading figure, is exceptionally rewarding for a big and fantastic team at Inglis,’’ Hutch said.

“Each and every year we go to market to solicit support from both breeders and buyers and to see where we are today, to have seen so many great results for vendors and so many buyers leaving our sales so happy, it’s very satisfying.

“The team at Inglis works very hard to give our clients the best possible experience when they participate in our sales, be that as a seller or a buyer and we are already working hard in preparation for the next sales season.’’
