Shalaa Filly Wins $125,000 Elvstroem Classic for Prime

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 10

Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (IRE) has had a busy season with his juveniles and racked up his 13th 2YO winner of the season on Friday when the Prime Thoroughbreds colour bearer Quang Tri scored a tenacious win in the $125,000 Vobis Gold Elvstroem Classic (1300m) at Swan Hill.

The Patrick Payne trained filly had been fifth, third and second in her three previous starts and she produced a career best performance to hold off $1million Showdown winner Kings Consort to win by half a length.

Prime Thoroughbreds have had a lot of success with Patrick Payne through horses such as Rubisaki, Husson Eagle, Invincible Al and the list goes on.

“That was fantastic,” said Prime Thoroughbreds Joe O’Neill, who was on course to greet Quang Tri as she returned to scale.

“Patrick has done a great job and that was our 80th win together.

“She’s a beauty, we bought her at Inglis Premier last year. Bill and James Mitchell looked at her and thought she was a pretty good filly. She’s by Shalaa and her second dam was third in an AJC Oaks so there is a lot of upside.”

Quang Tri as a yearling.

Quang Tri was a $90,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Prime Thoroughbreds from the Rushton Park draft and is a half-sister to good Sydney metro winner Saigon being the second winner from stakes-winning Thorn Park mare Saigon Tea, who died prematurely last year
