Pedigree Watch – France – Guineas Winners

Tara Madgwick - Sunday May 15

Longchamp overnight featured the first of the French Classics with the Group I Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (fillies) and the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (colts) for the colts decided and the winners sired by Dubawi and Dark Angel.

Acclaim filly Cachet bidding to become only the second filly this century to land the English-French 1,000 Guineas double, but she came up short beaten a head by French trained contender Mangoustine.

Trained by Mikel Delzangles, Mangoustine won all three starts at two including a Group III at Chantilly and was third when returning this year in the Group III Criterium de Lyon.

Mangoustine was bought by David Redvers for €46,000 at the Arqana Select Yearling Sale in 2020 and runs for an ownership group that includes French basketball legend and former NBA star Tony Parker.

Mangoustine is the first winner for Zotilla, a half-sister by Zamindar to Champion French 2YO Filly Flotilla, who won a Breeders Cup Turf Juvenile and also the Group I Poule d’Essai des Pouliches in 2013.

She is the tenth Group I winner for Dark Angel, who has one son at stud in Australia in Harry Angel (IRE).

The colts edition was won by Godolphin with the Charlie Appleby  trained Modern Games scoring a length and a quarter win over Wootton Bassett colt Texas.

Modern Games was having his first run since winning the Group I Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf and may now progress to the French Derby.

Modern Games has the impressive record of five wins and a second from seven starts. He is a half-brother to stakes-winner Modern News, who won his first Listed race last week.

The Dubawi x New Approach nick is building some good results with eight winners from 11 runners and four of those winners being stakes-winners so 36% SW to runner.
