Moonee Valley record would be super but it's not everything

Ben Dorries - Friday September 29

If flying machine Super Too shatters a Moonee Valley course record on Friday night, it won't have been part of a deliberate plan from trainer Marc Conners.

It would be super if Super Too broke the Moonee Valley course record but that isn't the plan

The speedy mare who won in track record time over 1000m at Randwick last start is the $2.80 favourite for the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Heat I (955m) after drawing ideally in barrier one.

So could Super Too threaten the Moonee Valley course record of 54.69 set by Vatican in 2013?

Conners says it is the last thing on his mind, even despite an added incentive with the trainer of the fastest heat winner of the series collecting an extra $55,000 booty.

"I'm not worried about records, if we run a slow time and we win I will be delighted, I'm not planning to try to break any records," Conners said.

"To be honest, winning is the only thing that matters.''

Warwick Farm-based Conners has been thrilled with Super Too ever since jockey Blake Shinn put the hammer down and built a big enough lead to hold off her rivals at Randwick on August 19.

Her time that day of 55.72 seconds eclipsed the track record posted by De Lightning Ridge in 2010.

But what has really raised Conners' confidence ahead of Friday night's mission was a pleasing gallop around Moonee Valley on Monday morning.

"The real key with her was that I wanted her to work well at Moonee Valley and for her to show me she likes the track, and we have ticked those boxes," Conners said.

"Everything is lining up really well for her.

"As with all of these 955m races, I will be happy or sad very early in the race.

"But I'm confident she will be acquit herself very well."

The scratching of noted speedsters Miss Vista and Petite's Reward is also likely to make Super Too's job easier at Moonee Valley.
