The Best in the West - Siyouni's Amelia's Jewel Stays Perfect in Karrakatta Plate

Mark Smith - Saturday April 2

Owner Peter Walsh and trainer Simon Price were choked with emotion after the magnificent Siyouni filly Amelia's Jewel kept her record at a perfect three for three with a stunning performance in Saturday's $500,000 Group II Amelia Park-Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot.

Following wins in the GroAmelia's Jewel - something special (image Western Racepix)up III WATC Gimcrack Stakes and Listed Bunbury TC Supremacy Stakes, Amelia's Jewel went off a short-priced favourite in the Karrakatta Plate and gave her growing fan base reason to cheer.

With just two runners behind her on the turn, Amelia's Jewel was angled to the centre of the track by Patrick Carberry.

Picking off one after another, Amelia’s Jewel put the race to bed at the 200m. She defeated the Playing God filly Baby Paris by two and a half lengths with the Universal Ruler filly Penny On The Queen a length back in third.

“I’ve had some good horses in my time, but she is special,” Walsh said.

“All my girls are here today. Jessie, my youngest daughter, is the strapper. We found out she was working for Simon after about two or three weeks, but that’s Jessie.”

“I’m a wreck, Price said. I knew we had the right product and the first time I galloped her I thought what have we got here.

“We’ve had a lot of good horses and I’ve tried to win this race (for walsh) because he sponsors the race. I won the race one year where we beat his horse.

“The track was against us today, but she is a freak. Sometimes fairytales come to fruition and I’ve won it for him.

“Pat (Carberry) has not had a day off for a month. He isolates from everyone at the track, won't touch anyone, won't shake hands. We were on a mission to not get Covid.”

The principal of Amelia Park Stud, Walsh purchased two mares at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale through Astute Bloodstock.

He had been impressed with Kingman and Siyouni on a trip to Europe. He sent his 76,000 guineas purchase Bumbasina (IRE) to Siyouni, and 45,000 guineas purchase Bound Cop to Kingman.

Talk about hitting the jackpot. In keeping with a policy to race fillies and sell the colts, Siyouni’s filly Amelia’s Jewel was retained while Bound Copy’s Kingman colt was consigned to the 2021 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale through the Segenhoe Stud draft. He was knocked down to Aramco Racing for $600,000 and has been named Zurich.

Bumbasina (IRE) is a half-sister to Group II winner Epona Playsustralia) and Group III winner Dolce Strega (Zoffany).

Bumbasina (IRE) has a yearling colt by Merchant Navy, which topped Magic Millions Perth Book 2, selling for $160,000.

After foaling a colt by Blue Point (IRE) last spring, she was covered by Capitalist.
