One to Watch Goes Two for Two at Moonee Valley

Tara Madgwick - Friday March 25

A few weeks ago we highlighted an impressive debut winner at Ararat by Frosted (USA) that had an intriguing name and he upped the ante at Moonee Valley on Friday night to win in a breeze at his second start.

Ice Pick Nick goes two for two at Moonee Valley - image Grant Courtney

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, three year-old gelding Ice Pick Nick again showed abundant pace from an inside gate for Linda Meech to take up the lead and he opened up down the running to take the open 3YO sprint over 1200m by nearly four lengths.

“He jumped well and I was able to dictate terms from there and he put them to the sword pretty easily,” said Meech.

“He’s got the brain of a 2YO, but when works things out a bit more he will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Ice Pick Nick was retained to race by his breeders Colin and Janice McKenna and had a big crowd of owners in attendance. He is a half-brother to Group II placed Curran and is the third winner from winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Tramell.

For people who remember the iconic murder thriller Basic Instinct starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, Stone’s character was Catherine Tramell and Douglas played detective Nick Curran.

There was the infamous leg crossing scene but also the ice pick murder hence the name Ice Pick Nick!

Tramell has a yearling colt by Frosted (USA) and a weanling filly by Impending, will be interesting to see what names they come up with for them!

Frosted (USA)

She is also back in foal to Frosted, so Ice Pick Nick must have been showing connections good things at home and looks set for more wins to come.
