One to Watch – Geelong

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday March 22

Fourth in the $1million ATC Golden Gift behind Sejardan, this Capitalist colt always looked a good thing in a maiden at Geelong on Tuesday.

Cannonball wins with ease at Geelong - image Reg Ryan / Racing Photos

Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Cannonball was having his first run back from a spell and proved way too classy as a hot favourite, drawing clear to win by a length and three-quarters for Mark Zahra at his third start.

“He’s a nice colt that had been jumping out well prior to today and he had improved a lot on his last prep and had the blinkers off today,” said Zahra.

“He was relaxed and only led by what he had to and when I asked him he gave a good kick.”

A $975,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for James Harron Bloodstock, Cannonball is a full brother to Group II winner Marine One and is the second winner from stakes-winning Snitzel mare Golconda, who was also third in the Group I VRC Oaks.

Cannonball was the most expensive yearling by Capitalist sold at Magic Millions in 2021.

Golconda has no yearling for the sales this year, but did have a filly by Written Tycoon last spring and is now back in foal to Capitalist.
