Dorrington Farm - Going to Extremes

Media Release - Thursday March 17

It has been an eventful few weeks for Rob and Sylvie Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm and the ride might not be over yet.

Earlier this month it was announced that the 2021 Group 1 Canterbury Stakes would be awarded to the Dorrington bred and raced, Mizzy, after Savatiano was disqualified.

Meanwhile, last week the Anthony Cummings trained, She’s Extreme – racing in Dorrington’s red and white checks – catapulted herself into $5 million Golden Slipper calculations by capturing the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes, over the Slipper journey at Rosehill Gardens.

Indeed, Dorrington may well have two pronged attack in the world’s richest 2YO race if talented emergency, Semillion – bred on farm – gets a start for Hawkes Racing.

“Mizzy is out of Missy Cummings and I was thrilled to see Magnus get his first Group 1 as a damsire,” a delighted Rob Crabtree points out. “We bred and raced (Group 1 winning sprinter) Magnus and he’s been an outstanding sire with over 50 stakes horses.

“Magnus has two runners in Saturday’s ($5 million) All Star Mile with (multiple Group 1 winner) Streets of Avalon and King Magnus and he had five winners last weekend including Group 2 Ajax Stakes winner Just Folk at Rosehill.”

Dorrington Farm Stud Manager, Jorja Gammage, with Missy Cummings in front of the ‘rose walk’ at Dorrington Farm in Victoria’s north east.

Mizzy’s dam Missy Cummings is another Dorrington homebred and she won three out of four, including the Listed James HB Carr Stakes in Sydney. As the name might suggest, Missy Cummings is another highlight in the decades long partnership between Crabtree and the Randwick trainer.

“She’s Extreme was actually the second Magic Night winner for us after Scandiva (a three quarter sister to Magnus, a half sister to the dam of Black Caviar and closely related to Semillion) won in 2013 when trained by Anthony,” Crabtree reveals. “Scandiva didn’t run in the Slipper but was a gallant runnerup to Guelph in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce, so fingers crossed She’s Extreme can do the job on Saturday.”

Win or lose, Crabtree’s focus will soon shift from Rosehill Gardens to the Inglis complex at Warwick Farm given that Dorrington – via the Bhima draft – will offer a Zoustar filly from the Crabtrees 2017 Group 1 Blue Diamond winner, Catchy.

“We won’t forget that day in a hurry,” Crabtree adds. “Catchy won the Diamond and in the following race – the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate – Shiedel won in our colours while Miss Promiscuity, a Magnus mare we bred and raced to win over $600,000, ran fifth in the Oakleigh as well.

“We’ve had a bit of a luck in the Blue Diamond over the years – finishing first through to fifth – and our homebred, Enbihaar (also by Magnus), ran second in the Group 1 the year after Catchy.

“We’re really looking forward to Saturday and it’s just great to have a runner in the race.”
