Kissing Cousins - Vancouver 2YO Impresses on Debut

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday March 16

This girl looks a lot like her cousin who won the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude.

Set to stand at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria this spring, Golden Slipper winning sire Vancouver made his mark early at the Sandown meeting on Wednesday with impressive two year-old debut winner Yowie.

Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Damian Lane, Yowie looked a class above when cruising clear to win the 1000m scamper for fillies by a length and a half.

Her trainer has stakes aspirations for the filly who has done everything right to date with the Listed MRC Redoute’s Choice Stakes in three weeks time a likely target.

A $240,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Corumbene Stud draft for Jacquers, she runs for stable client David Digney, who looks to have a very promising filly in the making.

Yowie is the first foal from lightly raced metro winning Exceed and Excel mare Marishka, a full sister to Golden Slipper winner Overreach (dam of this season’s unbeaten 2YO and Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude winner Lofty Strike) and Group II winning sprinter Standout.

Yowie was a $240,000 Inglis Easter yearling, bred and sold by Corumbene.

Lofty Strike was a $280,000 Magic Millions yearling, bred and sold by Corumbene.

In human terms, Lofty Strike and Yowie would be cousins and they share the same bay colouring and prominent blaze as their grand-dam Bahia, who also gave the blaze to Standout.

The female family is renowned for juvenile speed and also features Blue Diamond winning sire Reward for Effort.

Corumbene Stud sold a Pride of Dubai filly from Marishka for $120,000 at Magic Millions Book 2 this year to A List Stud and the mare was covered by Capitalist last spring.

Vancouver has been riding high in recent weeks with his brilliant son Overpass, who won the Group II ATC Expressway Stakes when resuming form a spell, then was second to Lost and Running in the Group III ATC Southern Cross before winning the $750,000 Inglis Sprint at Flemington.

Well tuned by Bjorn Baker, he lines up in the Group I ATC The Galaxy at Rosehill on Saturday and has drawn gate one with Tim Clark to ride

Like Yowie, Overpass is bred from a daughter of champion sire Exceed and Excel, the nick producing five winners from seven runners.
