Cascadian Digs Deep in Peter Young Stakes

Mark Smith - Sunday February 27

Although he is unlikely to make Godolphin's top ten, Cascadian (GB) has been a magnificent servant for the global superpower, contributing $3,886,075 to the coffers.

Last year's Group 1 Doncaster Mile hero has been placed seven times at the highest level.

The 7yo son of New Approach (IRE) has winning photos from Deauville, Maisons-Laffitte, Rosehill, Randwick and added Caulfield to the list with his fighting win in Saturday's Group II Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes (1800m).

With Damien Oliver in the saddle, Cascadian fought off the challenge of Yonkers (USA) (Medaglia d'Oro) by a half-length with Emissary (GB) (Kingman) a head back in third.

Stable representative Sean Keogh said the James Cummings-trained 7yo gelding had retained his zest for racing.

"Ollie got him in a lovely spot, and to see those muddling early furlongs didn't deter us because we know that there's plenty more for this horse this preparation," Keogh said.

"We brought him here on Tuesday and worked him with Ingratiating, and he was smoking up behind him with plenty of speed in his legs. A beautiful win from the horse."

Cascadian (GB) had shown Group 1 form in France. Andre Fabre trained him when narrowly defeated by Intellogent in the 2018 Group 1 Prix Jean Prat.

The pedigree of Cascadian (GB) received a massive update last year when his 2yo half-brother Albahr completed a four-race winning streak in the Group 1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. The son of Dubawi blotted his copybook at his next start when scratched from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf after playing up in the barriers.

Cascadian is a son of Epsom Derby hero New Approach out of the talented Street Cry (IRE) mare Falls Of Lora, whose four wins included the Group III UAE Oaks and the Listed Distaff Stakes at Sandown.

Falls Of Lora was one of four stakes-winners for Danehill's stakes-winning daughter Firth Of Lorne, runner-up in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
