Mac 'N' Cheese a Hugely Talented Problem Child

Mark Smith - Saturday July 17

There will be better days ahead for Spendthrift Farms talented Sebring filly Mac ‘N’ Cheese, who came from last to open her winning account in Saturday’s Listed Oaklands Plate (1400m) at Morphettville Parks.

Ridden by Barend Vorster for Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Mac ‘N’ Cheese missed the start, just as she had done at her first two starts.

Vorster let the Sebring filly off the bridle at the 600m, and she was widest of all on the home turn. Still with plenty to do at the 200m to run down the freewheeling Winning Rupert gelding Tonneofgrit, Mac ‘N’ Cheese extended impressively to win by a widening two lengths.

The Not A Single Doubt gelding Gosden was a further back in third.

A fast-finishing second at her first two starts, Mac ‘N’ Cheese is proving to be something of a problem child for Tony McEvoy.

“She is hairy to watch. I was really disappointed early as we have done a lot of work on her at the barriers, McEvoy said.

“She has been jumping out well at home. I gave her a trial at Gawler, and she jumped out well. I was really confident she would jump out today, and sure enough, she blew the start.

“It was a hard watch for me from then on, but she clearly showed her talent

“The leader had a cosy run up the front, and she did all the work. I have to say that Barend summed it up. He went early, came around them and was able to run down the leader.

“I’m sure she can run a mile plus, but we have to get her manners better. I will talk to the Spendthrift guys, but I would like to see her later in the spring. We have some work to do. You can’t give away a start, but she is a great talent.

“She is a good quality filly, and there is more to come.”

Mac 'N' Cheese a $300,000 Magic Millions Yearling

Bred by Nick Vass, Mac ‘N’ Cheese was a $300,000 purchase by Spendthrift Australia from the Newgate Farm draft at the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is the third live foal and third stakes-winner out of the class racemare and grand producer Bonnie Mac.

The daughter of Thorn Park won the Listed Proud Miss Stakes. When offered by Oakwood Farm at the 2014 National Broodmare Sale, Bonnie Mac was a $460,000 purchase for Guy Mulcaster.

Her first live foal was Exceedance, who won the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes and Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes before earning a spot on the Vinery Stud roster.

A full brother to Exceedance, the Peter Moody-trained Oxley Road made it two from two for Bonnie Mac when he won the Group III MRC Zedative Stakes.

A half-sister to Group III winners Upham and Intimate Moment, and Listed winner Gold Rum, Bonnie Mac was onsold by Newgate Farm at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $375,000 to Allam Racing/Andrew Williams Bloodstock when in foal to Capitalist, but died in May last year.

Her final foal is a striking Capitalist colt consigned by Yarraman Park Stud to the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where Hickman Racing bought him for $1,050,000.

Mac ‘N’ Cheese becomes the 70th stakes-winner for Widden Stud’s sadly missed Golden Slipper winner Sebring who also sired last weeks impressive Group III Winx Stakes winner Our Playboy.

A lot to live up to The final foal of Bonnie Mac the $1,050,000 Capitalist colt
