Bonvicini Another Rising Star Filly for Myboycharlie

Mark Smith - Sunday February 16

Punters that were left reeling after the upset win of Gytrash in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes had the dagger inserted a little deeper when the 3yo Myboycharlie (IRE) filly Bonvicini powered home over the top of the well-supported Pretty Brazen in Saturday’s Group III The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington.

The winner of the Listed SAJC Morphettville Guineas in September last year, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained filly was making her first start since finishing fourth in the Group II Moonee Valley Fillies Classic last October.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Bonvicini came with a barnstorming finish to defeat Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau) by a length with Meuse (Snitzel) three-quarters of a length back in third.

"This horse I thought would appreciate the cut in the track, the breed really like it,” Maher said.

"I thought she might have peaked on her run, but she's got a beautiful action she just strode through the line."

Maher has enjoyed great success with the progeny of Bonvicini's sire Myboycharlie (IRE) who sired the outstanding Jameka who was a three-time Group 1 winner led by her success in the Caulfield Cup.Myboycharlie has sired some great fillies

“We might have to go on a European holiday and try and find where Myboycharlie (IRE) is and bring him back out here as I'm quite fond of training them,” Maher said.

Maher will need to go to Turkey where the former Vinery Stud and Bowness Stud shuttler was relocated to this year after being purchased by The Turkish Jockey Club off Haras du Mezeray.

In Australia Myboycharlie (IRE) sired the Group 1 winners Begood Toya Mother, Jameka, and Peggy Jean while north of the equator he has the champion mares Euro Charline and Sistercharlie who ran second in the French Oaks before becoming a seven-time Grade 1 winner in the US where she was honoured as champion turf female.

Maher said the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill next month was a realistic goal for Bonvicini who has won three of her six starts with earnings of $188,650.

Greg Perry raced Bonvicini’s dam Orvieto, a $220,000 daughter of Testa Rossa, who won three of her five starts.

Out of the stakes-placed Unbridled’s Song (USA) mare Radio Song, Orvieto has a yearling colt by All Too Hard, which is in the Vinery Stud draft heading to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, a filly foal by Dundeel and was covered by Press Statement last spring.
