Tom Baddock - Wednesday August 30

Marishka, the sister of 2013 Golden Slipper winner Overreach, made a winning debut at Canterbury in a Maiden Handicap (1100m) on Wednesday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly settled just behind the leader before knuckling down late to overhaul Tim Martin's Shudabeen ($9) by three-quarters of a length with a further 1-1/2 lengths back to Chis Waller's Wild About Her ($4.20).

"It was a very pleasing effort," Paul Snowden said.

"She didn't begin that well but she had lovely run in transit and popped out at the right time and was good late.

"She's still just learning how to gather herself up and really ask for an effort under pressure because it's pretty effortless what she does at home and she doesn't get off the bridle a lot, so it's all a learning curve for her today and she's got the job done."

Snowden believes the blue-blood filly will improve immensely from the raceday experience.

"She is going to get a lot out of today. She did everything right back at the stables and handled the day extremely well," he said.

"There is a fair bit of upside to her and she's just going to learn from it."

Jockey Blake Shinn has always had a good opinion of the three-year-old.

"Last time in as a two-year-old we thought she was quite smart and Peter and Paul were thinking we were going to get her to the races at a good level but she didn't get there and they gave her the necessary time and the owners are going to reap the benefits," Shinn said.

"I think she is going to end up in some good races."

Marishka is the sixth foal from Bahia with the mare due to foal another Exceed and Excel this season.
