Snitzel Filly Impresses On Debut

Mark Smith - Saturday January 4

Two hundred metres out in Saturday’s Hyland Race Colours Hcp at Randwick-Kensington, the $1,700,000 Exceed And Exceed colt Osamu looked set for a winning debut when he ambled to the lead on a tight rein by James McDonald but out of the pack from near last emerged the Snitzel debutant Philizzy.

Ridden by Christian Reith for trainer Anthony Cummings, Philizzy wore down to Osamu to win by a short-head with the Written Tycoon colt Remorseless two lengths back in third.Snitzel filly Philizzy makes a winning debut at Randwick - image Steve Hart

Despite being eligible for next week’s $2 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic at the Gold Coast, Cummings favoured giving the daughter of Snitzel a spell and prepare her for the Golden Slipper.

“She a really nice filly but has a bit to learn, Cummings said.

“She’s eligible for the Magic Millions but I’m not sure I want to make that trip right now. We will see how she pulls up and have a think about that this week. I’m more inclined to wait and try and get her ready of the Slipper.”

Purchased by 2K Tbreds/Anthony Cummings Thoroughbreds for $340,000 out of the Baramul Stud draft the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Philizzy is the 11th foal and 9th winner out of the Last Tycoon (IRE) mare Sovereign Duchess.

Though she was no great shakes as a racehorse with one win from 10 starts, Sovereign Duchess has proved to be a star for Baramul. She has had a foal in all of the 13 seasons she has been bred with just the 2015 season having a rest.

She is the dam of the Group II MVRC Stutt Stakes winner and Group 1 MRC Toorak Handicap runner-up Sovereign Nation, as well as the stakes-placegetters Recoinage (Flying Spur) and Houston Benefactor (Encosta de Lago).

Sovereign Duchess is a half-sister to that remarkable New Zealand mare Princess Coup, the 4-time Group 1 wining daughter of Encosta de Lago, who was honoured as the Champion 3YO Filly in NZ in 2006-07, Champion Older Female & Stayer in NZ in 2007-08 and was the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year.

The win will be welcomed by Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Stud who will consign a full sister to Philizzy at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

And to top it off Sovereign Duchess had another filly by Snitzel on November 19.

With 57 lots catalogued there will be no shortage of opportunities to acquire a Snitzel at the Magic Millions but they will no doubt come at a cost.
