Smart Missile's Broadwayandfourth Captures Crockett Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 26

Trainer Mitchell Freedman’s impressive stable of three-year-olds, which includes Classic hopefuls Moonlight Maid and Southern Moon, grew by one at Moonee Valley on Saturday when the Smart Missile filly Broadwayandfourth powered home to earn her first stakes win in Saturday’s Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m).

Punters let out a cheer when short-priced favourite Villami kick-clear rounding the home bend as Ben Melham darted back to the fence on  Broadwayandfourth, quickly reeling in the favourite before holding the fast-finishing Niccovi (Nicconi) by a length with Villami (Foxwedge) a further neck away in third.Broadwayandfourth a stakes winner at his third start - image Granr Courtney

Making just her third race start, Broadwayandfourth came into the race off a maiden win at Ballarat three weeks ago.

"She's always shown us good ability but she's going to be so much better next time around," Freedman told AAP.

"We're looking forward to what the future holds with her.

"There's races there for her but we've just been managing her.

"She's had a little bit of shin soreness but she's that tough and it doesn't seem to worry her.

"She's got a lot of ability and I wouldn't rule out a race like the Sangster Stakes in Adelaide for her in the autumn.

"I'd like to give her a break and let her grow and develop a little more and then maybe target a race like that."

A homebred for Bungan Street Thoroughbreds, Broadwayandfourth is the best of three winners from as many to race out of the Listed SAJC Dequetteville Stakes winner Broadway Harmony who had a Dissident colt sell for $160,000 to  Teng Long/Legends Bstock/McKeever Bloodstock out of the Esker Lodge draft at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

A daughter of Statue Of Liberty (USA), Broadway Harmony has a yearling colt by Wandjina and foaled a Dissident filly on September 12.

Broadwayandfourth becomes the 15th stakes-winner for Twin Hills Stud’s prolific Fastnet Rock stallion Smart Missile who stands in 2019 at a fee of $22,000.
