Brilliant Queensland 3YO likely to bypass Golden Rose

Ben Dorries - Saturday August 26

Toby Edmonds will think about the Golden Rose with brilliant Gold Coast winner Whypeeo but says the riches of the Magic Millions carnival in January is a more likely mission.

The three-year-old gelding ran a class record and ran his rivals into the ground when the $2.45fav scooted along in front to post a dominant length win over Golden Rose aspirant Shogun Sun ($2.70) in the QTIS 3YO Handicap (1100m).

Shogun Sun, a recent Sydney winner ran on well, and Stuart Kendrick's resuming filly Italia Bella ($8.50) was another length back in third.

Whypeeo is nominated for next month's Group I Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill but don't bank on him getting there.

"I think maybe he is too brilliant for the Golden Rose," Edmonds said.

"He is a Millions horse and will probably be aimed towards that.

"Now, we probably just want him to relax a bit.

"These geldings can get running and it can fry their heads.

"We have just got to be careful he doesn't get too aggressive."

Kelly Schweida was happy with the run of second-placed Shogun Sun and said everything remained on track for a crack at the Golden Rose.

"I thought he went good. I always thought he was probably going to get a bit too far back in this race today," Schweida said.

Kendrick, who has Thousand Guineas aspirations for Italia Bella, was right in his pre-race assessment his filly would be run off her legs over 1100m.

"She was off the bit a long way out and it is clear she will be much better over more distance."

Whypeeo has now won two from three and has returned to his winning ways after being slow out and over-racing when he ran fourth at Doomben a fortnight ago.
