Unkindest cut pays dividends for Doomben winner

AAP - Saturday September 9

The decision of trainer Toby Edmonds to geld well-bred Whypeeo has continued to pay dividends.

Whypeeo was sent out a $1.16 favourite and won like one strolling home in the 3YO Handicap (1110m).

It took his record to four starts for three wins and an unlucky fourth when he bungled the start at Doomben last month.

Edmonds was in Melbourne with stable star Houtzen, with his son Trent Edmonds in charge of the Brisbane team.

"The funny thing is he could not go a yard when he was a colt. We tried blinkers on him but it wasn't until we decided to geld him that he turned the corner," Trent Edmonds said.

Whypeeo will now have three weeks in a paddock before being brought back to prepare for the $2million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) in January.

"I have no doubt he will run 1400m on his ear. He settled well today and he is getting better with racing," Edmonds said.

"It wasn't a tough test today but he won like you would want a odds on favourite to win."

Whypeeo is by champion sire I Am Invincible and took his prize money to just under $100,000 with Saturday's win.
