International Purchase Produces a Star Foal for Rosemont

Media Release - Monday August 26
One of international racing's highlights of the year came last week in the thrilling win of superstar mare Enable in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

But no filly or mare has been more dominant in that race this century than Sadler's Wells mare Quiff who won in a hand-canter by 11 lengths in 2004 … sporting the same colours as Enable last week. She would go on to be nominated as Cartier 3yo filly of the year and run second in the G1 St Leger as the only filly in the race.

Starspangledbanner filly from QuiffWhy the history lesson? Well Quiff has now found an unlikely home at Rosemont Stud and last night produced one of Rosemont's fillies of the year by now-resident stallion Starspangledbanner.

"We are thrilled with the result," Rosemont's Anthony Mithen said. "Quiff is a Group One winner out of Group One winner and has given us a beautiful filly that might just keep that record going."

A deep family that has been cultivated and mined ever so brilliantly by international juggernaut Juddmonte Farm, Quiff was purchased by Rosemont at the first time she had ever been offered for sale at the Tattersall's UK breeding stock sale in Newmarket in 2016 in foal to Holy Roman Emperor.

"We were so desperately hoping for a filly to be able to race and breed from but ended up with a tidy colt. We sold him for 42,000 pounds which virtually covered the purchase price of Quiff and put her on an IRT flight straight to home base in downtown Geelong," Mithen said.

"She took a while to acclimatise and missed her first southern hemisphere season covered by Starcraft but went straight in foal to Starspangledbanner last year and we couldn't be happier to get a filly. For an older mare, she looks in great shape so we will try our luck with new boy Shamus Award this year and try for another Mr Quickie."

Quiff has been a good producer without jagging a black-type horse yet. From seven foals to race, she has produced 6 winners, four of them winning on multiple occasions. Quiff's mother Wince won the G1 English Thousand Guineas as well as the G3 Newbury Fred Darling Stakes. She is also the mother of stakes-placed Arabian Gulf and Total Command.

Starspangledbanner will cover a restricted book of mares at Rosemont in 2019 at the fee of $22,000.
