Street Cry's Gaulois Claims Rowley Mile

Mark Smith - Thursday August 22

The betting told the story in Thursday's Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury.

After opening up at $4, Godolphin representative Gaulois was backed down to $2.80 favourite and he gave his supporters few moments of worry.

Winner of the Listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill on June 29, the son of Street Cry (IRE) advances his record to 6 wins, 6 seconds and 7 thirds from 27 starts with earnings of $614,625.

"He (Clark) gave him a peach of a ride. He travelled really well and he is the type of horse that helps the rider," Godolphin representative Darren Beadman said.

"Tim had a lapful of horse coming around the corner and had a lot of horses with big weights behind him and was able to capitalise on his perfect run and fitness.

"He's got great winter form and he has not been overly comfortable on the wet tracks but back on top of the ground here today he was able to use his acceleration to his advantage.

"He has been all over the country he was a bit stiff Western Australia in the (WA) Guineas, he's a very genuine horse and a good horse to have in the yard."

A half-brother to the Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner La Tene (Helmet). Gaulois is out of Lonhro's top-class daughter Celts whose four wins included the Group III ATC Birthday Card Stakes and Listed Macquarie Cup.

Celts' dam Dinna Flash (Canny Lad) is a half-sister to the honest sprinter Appoint (Alquoz) whose 11 wins included the Group III VATC Rubiton Stakes.

Celts was not covered in 2016 but she delivered a Teofilo (IRE) filly last spring before being bred back to Street Cry's son Street Boss (USA).
