Two Winners on the Card for Former Top Racemare

Mark Smith - Sunday August 11

The 2009 SAJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Silent Surround was an overachiever on the track and she looks as if she has taken that to stud as she had the rare distinction of producing two winners at the South Australian feature meeting at Murray Bridge on Saturday.

The Tony McEvoy-trained debutant Silent Sovereign was not expected to offer any real challenge to stablemate Deep Force in the day's opener over 1200 metres but she charged home from last under Raquel Clark to defeat Lindsay Park's royally-bred Fastnet Rock filly Pelican by one and three-quarter lengths with Deep Force (Deep Field) a struggling third.

Clark said the daughter of Dalakhani (IRE) has a bright future.

"My filly looked beautiful in the yard and she is a nice big striding horse," she said

"As I was going to the barrier she was quite keen and I thought she was switched on today and she was definitely that.

"They say the McEvoys have got Ferrari's and she is just one of them."

Silent Surround races in the colours of her breeders the Moyle family who also bred the second winner on the card for Silent Surround, the 5yo Commands gelding Silent Command.

Winner of the 2017 Listed SAJC Morphettville Guineas, Silent Command burst back to form in a benchmark 70 over 1600 metres.

His trainer Nick Smart said he may target some cup races for Silent Command who had been winless in 11 starts since his Guineas triumph.

"He showed a good bit early and I probably made a few mistakes with him along the way," Smart said.

"I tried to stretch him out to a South Australian Derby the last prep he just had no luck so hopefully we'll get a few rewards this prep.

Silent Command is the first foal and Silent Sovereign the second foal of former top-class racemare Silent Surround who was raced by the Moyle and Smart families.

A $36,000 yearling by Face Value, Silent Surround returned over $300,000 highlighted by a win in the Group III SA Sires' Produce Stakes.

She also placed in four stakes races including second to Faint Perfume in the Group II Wakeful Stakes and was third in the Group II Edward Manifold Stakes.

Silent Surround has a 2yo gelding by Dundeel named Silent Don and a yearling filly by Fiorente (IRE). She was covered by So You Think last spring.
