Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 28

The end of the season is coming fast but there are still plenty of two year-olds getting ready to race and we saw 10 juvenile heats at Randwick on Friday with winners including a colt that has the distinction of being the most expensive first crop yearling in Australia for Swettenham Stud’s promising young High Chaparral son Toronado (IRE).

Masked CrusaderA stunning individual, very much stamped in the mould of his sire, Masked Crusader made a pleasing effort at his first public outing for Team Hawkes.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, Masked Crusader settled off the pace and surged home between runners under a hold to score a narrow head win in the 730 metre scamper.

A $340,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Hawkes Racing / Cameron Cooke Bloodstock from the Gilgai Farm draft, Masked Crusader runs in the familiar colours of Rupert Legh for an ownership group that also includes his breeder Rick Jamieson of Gilgai Farm.

Masked Crusader is a half-brother to stakes-placed Outlaw Kate and smart metropolitan winner High Ratio being from stakes-winning Invincible Spirit (IRE) mare Shes Got Gears.
